Physical Education

Intent

At Heaton Park Primary School, PE is a very important part of our school curriculum. We aim to give all children, irrespective of their academic or physical ability, the opportunity to develop their physical potential through a wide range of sports activities. This allows the children to progress their PE skills, knowledge and concepts throughout school, from EYFS up to KS2.

Implementation

At Heaton Park, we are lucky enough to have a full-time school sports coach who teaches some of our PE lessons, some after school sports clubs, lunch time clubs and forest school! Our PE lessons include a wide variety of sports such as dance, gymnastics, football, basketball, netball, tennis, badminton, athletics and rugby.

At Heaton Park, we are always encouraging our children to stay active, we try to do lots of outdoor learning through cross-curricular links with other subjects, such as science, geography and our orienteering course. The children gain extra skills, such as team-building, through activities like forest school.

We take part in lots of school competitions around Bury, Prestwich and Whitefield which enables the children to develop a healthy appetite for competitive sports. We offer a wide variety of sporting activities throughout school life here at Heaton Park Primary and children can attend clubs with the opportunity to represent school in the following:

  • Cross Country
  • Football
  • Netball
  • Swimming
  • Athletics
  • Boccia
  • Tag Rugby
  • Basketball

Impact

The children at Heaton Park Primary develop a huge passion and enjoyment for PE and sports. Sport at Heaton Park plays a crucial role in child development both physically and mentally. Over the years at Heaton Park we have had children represent the Borough at the Greater Manchester games, former pupils have become professional sportsmen and women in their chosen field, with children competing at county level in swimming.
