Forest School is a child-centred inspirational learning process, that offers opportunities for holistic growth through regular sessions. It is a long-term program that supports play, exploration and supported risk taking. It develops confidence and self-esteem through learner inspired, hands-on experiences in a natural setting.
At Heaton Park it is used to help and facilitate more than knowledge-gathering, we find it helps learners develop socially, emotionally, spiritually, physically and intellectually. We ensure we develop a safe, non-judgemental nurturing environment for learners to experiment and take risks.
Forest School inspires a deep and meaningful connection to the world and an understanding of how a learner fits within it. Our approach to risk means that learners constantly expand on their abilities by solving real-world issues, building self-belief and resilience.
We believe that risk is more than just potential for physical harm, but a more holistic thing, there are risks in everything we do, and we grow by overcoming them. Forest School therefore, helps our pupils to become, healthy, resilient, creative and independent learners.

Eco Warriors
At Heaton Park we are passionate about the environment and the impact of our carbon footprint. We believe, in a world where climate change is having a huge impact on our environment we need to do our bit to make a difference. We encourage all children to develop an awareness of environmental topics both in the classroom and outside. Our children are given the opportunity to take leadership of environmental issues in our school and the local community. Children are encouraged to take active leadership in changes that they want to make in our school as this has allowed them to identify strengths and areas for improvement across the school.
The Eco warriors are a group of children from years 1 to 6, who meet regularly to discuss environmental and sustainability issues and projects. They have recently completed an environmental review and decided as a school we would like to focus on litter, energy and planting.
All of our children have a good awareness of the impact we have on the environment and are encouraged to make changes where possible. We at Heaton Park want to make a difference and are very proud of the awards we have received so far including the Eco School Green Flag Awards and the Woodland Trust Gold Award.
Come and see some of the projects we have done so far!
Den Day 2023
We are looking forward to switching off the lights once again for a fun filled day of outdoor learning.
Digging and Planting 2023
We have worked hard to improve our school grounds and will continue to develop the area into autumn term.
Global Recycling Day 2023
Raising awareness on recycling was one of our key focuses this year so our team of eco warriors set up a whole school project. We collected used crisp packets to create blankets for the homeless which were then handed to Bury Homeless Project.
